President Donald Trump signed an executive order launching "Mission Genesis," an ambitious national plan to implement artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific research and accelerate the pace of discoveries in the United States.
According to a statement from the White House, the initiative tasks the Department of Energy with creating an experimental AI-based platform that integrates supercomputers, national laboratories, and scientific databases to develop advanced models and automate experiments.
The order also instructs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology to coordinate the strategy at the federal level, in collaboration with universities and technology companies. Priority areas include biotechnology, nuclear energy, space exploration, semiconductors, and quantum science.
Trump emphasized that the Genesis Mission aims to “bring together the brightest minds in the country” and leverage the power of AI to tackle the major scientific challenges of our time.
With this effort, the government aims to "regain global leadership in scientific and technological innovation" and strengthen economic and national security.
The statement indicates that, despite the increase in research budgets since the nineties, scientific productivity has slowed down.
With the integration of artificial intelligence, the Trump Administration aims to complete projects that previously took years in just a few months.
The Genesis Mission adds to a series of executive orders initiated by Trump this year, aimed at strengthening the position of the United States as a global power in artificial intelligence and ensuring that technological development serves national interests.
