Cuban authorities arrested doctor Lilian Borroto López this Tuesday in Matanzas while she was protesting the detention of her mother, the intellectual and activist Alina Bárbara López Hernández.
“Just now, they arrested my sister Lilian Borroto López. It wasn't enough for them to arrest my mother Alina Bárbara López Hernández. My sister is sick… It's evident that the State Security is involved. This is a kidnapping,” reported her sister, Cecilia Borroto López.
According to the complaint, Dr. Lilian Borroto —who is currently ill— was transferred in a civilian car rather than in a police patrol, a detail that the family attributes to the involvement of State Security.
Alongside Lilian and Alina, the writer Jorge Fernández Era was also detained.
In a later update, Cecilia Borroto stated that all three remain detained and that Lilian and Jorge were taken in a "civilian" vehicle to the Beach Police Unit in Matanzas, through a "non-visible" entrance.
Cecilia Borroto also reported the systematic harassment against her family. She recalled that she and her sister filed a complaint over two years ago with the Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Matanzas against State Security for harassment, without having received a response.
The complainant expressed concern for her sister's well-being, who is recovering from chikungunya, and stated that she fears the recurrence of previous episodes of violence and persecution, including surveillance, interrogations of acquaintances, and pressures in public spaces.
The family demanded the immediate release of the three detainees and called for the harassment to stop: “Leave my family alone… we are not alone and you will not break us,” said Cecilia Borroto.
