The young Cuban artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, arrested by police officials last Monday at his home in Old Havana for the crime of “receiving stolen property, was released on bail today at four in the afternoon.

"I have gone three days without eating in protest of my unjust detention," the young man told 14ymedio just minutes after police released him from the station located at the corner of Cuba and Chacón streets.

In a raid conducted by Cuban authorities at the artist's home, they confiscated construction materials, including several bags of cement, sand, and gravel.

However, Yanelis Núñez, a colleague and partner of Luis Manuel, confesses to being convinced that the arrest was made to instill fear and to prevent people from attending the meeting they had planned to call what they are referring to as the 00Bienal of La Habana.

Following the suspension this year of the XIII Havana Biennial by the Ministry of Culture, the National Council of Plastic Arts, and the Wifredo Lam Center, these young individuals have set out to launch a call for the 00 Biennial of Havana, to be held from May 5 to 15, 2018. This initiative aims to provide a platform for Cuban and international artists to showcase their creations and to foster dialogue, exchange, and recognition.

The bail paid by the young man for his release was 1,000 Cuban pesos, and a trial will be held on Friday at the Havana Vieja Court.
