Since a few hours ago, the whereabouts of the visual artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara are unknown. This was reported by his partner, in life and professional projects, Yanelys Nuñez Leyva.
"At the beginning of his pilgrimage to the Rincón de San Lázaro, Luis Manuel has reportedly been detained by the Cuban State Security, when he was at Carlos III and Belascoain, Old Havana. I say reportedly because he disappeared yesterday the 14th without a trace around 10:30 pm, while resting with a friend, José Ernesto Alonso, with whom I have also lost all contact," Núñez wrote a few minutes ago on his Facebook profile.
Otero, for his part, had begun a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Rincón on this December 14th. The motivations for his journey were shared by the artist himself in a message to his friends on Facebook.
"Elimination of the blockade, prosperity, freedom of expression, free access to the internet, release of political prisoners, end to repression and discrimination based on beliefs, gender, or race, and genuine democracy" are some of the requests that Luis Manuel makes to San Lázaro and that motivated him to decide to drag himself "through the streets with a stone tied to his ankle from Old Havana to El Rincón."
Yanelys, for her part, claims to have inquired about Luis Manuel and his companion "at the nearest police stations, Zapata and C; and Dragones with Zanja, but neither of them has any news about them."
Recently, Otero was detained shortly before holding the first press conference for the alternative and independent event #00Bienal_dela_Habana, promoted in response to the government's decision to postpone the celebration of the 13th Havana Biennial.
Otero, on the other hand, has carried out several performative events related to the new reality created by 'wifi hotspots' in the country or the disappearance of the Mella statue from the Manzana de Gómez.
He is also the creator of an "impossible" monument for Fidel Castro and "all the world leaders who, out of humility, do not seek praise."
