The Buena Vista Social Club group remembered the victims of the air disaster in Cuba with a concert in Chile where they dedicated a minute of silence for the passengers of the crashed plane.

The singer and guitarist Eliades Ochoa, one of the great figures of Buena Vista, pointed out that the Chilean public welcomed the symbolic tribute of the Cuban musicians with a great show of respect.

“We found out about airplane disaster and we had to do a concert. We had to do something and I asked the audience for a minute of silence after the ovation with which they received us. I told them that the Cuban island is in mourning and that my colleagues from Buena Vista and I are going to observe a minute of silence for the disaster and they can join us if they wish. Then everything remained silent, it was a great show of respect and love for our country,” Ochoa told Cuban television.

Before continuing his tour with the Buena Vista, Eliades became the first Cuban musician to perform at the prestigious theater Royal Albert Hall, From london. His performance received praise from the public and critics who considered that the artist from Santiago is in one of the best moments of his career.

Buena Vista's farewell tour, titled Goodbye Tour, has reached several Latin American countries such as Argentina, Chile and Ecuador.

During the tour, several of its most recognized current figures have joined the group, such as Omara Portuondo, Eliades, Barbarito Torres, among others, who have included emblematic songs such as El Cuarto de Tula, El Chan Chan, and El Carretero in the repertoire.

The Buena Vista Social Club achieved worldwide fame after the release of the album of the same name in the late 90s and the film filmed by the German Win Wenders. Glories of Cuban music who have passed away have passed through the ranks of the orchestra, such as Compay Segundo, Ibrahím Ferrer, and Pío Leyva, among others.
