Extratropical low will affect western Cuba with rain, wind and sea penetration

The Forecasting Center Cuban Meteorological Institute has announced that a baja extra tropical, formed this morning over Texas, will intensify and affect the western provinces of Cuba and the Isle of Youth from the early hours of this Thursday, December 20.

The phenomenon is expected to be accompanied by southerly winds of between 30 and 45 kilometers per hour, which could reach higher gusts.

The cold front associated with the low that will approach the western end of Cuba tomorrow night, Thursday, will be "preceded by a line of showers and storms activity."

Swells are expected in low areas of the south-western coast from Pinar del Río to Cienfuegos on Thursday night, including the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud, which could cause light to moderate coastal flooding.

Forecasts indicate that sea penetration "can reach up to 500 meters in Batabanó and up to 1,000 meters in the low areas of Artemisa."

The winds are forecast to persist for approximately 24 hours, which could cause strong coastal flooding in low-lying areas on Friday morning, including the Havana seawall, on the northern coast of Cuba.
