Cuban Bert Campaneris is chosen as the best shortstop in the history of the A's

In a team with a rich history, no one has shone more in short stops.

If the Oakland Athletics have anything left over, it is history. Nine World Series endorse the greatness of the third most championship-winning team in the best baseball in the world, tied with the Boston Red Sox and only behind the New York Yankees (27 trophies) and the St. Louis Cardinals (11).

Lots of brilliant players have worn the franchise's jersey and, as expected in any great team, luxury shortstops have not been missing. Eddie Joost played there, noted for his good glove and patience at home plate. The power of the great Miguel Tejada also passed through there, and Marcus Semien has also been there, currently in the prime of his career.

However, no shortstop has shone in Oakland like the Cuban Bert Campaneris, whom MLB.com has just placed at the top of the defenders of that decisive position.

Leader in all-time victories in that team with a whopping 1882, Campaneris was vital in the dynasty that won three consecutive World Series titles between 1972-74, usually located at the top of the lineup and taking advantage of his innate ability to steal bases, a department where he ranks fourteenth in history with 649 successful attempts.

During his stay in Oakland, the Cuban was a five-time All-Star, but three years before arriving in that city he had already achieved the feat of becoming the first player to play all nine positions in a challenge, an event he achieved in 1965 with the Kansas City jersey against the Angels and that only four men have repeated since then.

“Putting ‘Campy’ at the top of this list is an easy choice,” MLB.com's comment closes.
