Vontae Davis, former Miami Dolphins player, was found dead Monday morning in a home in Southwest Ranches, a suburban community in the Miami area.
Police confirmed the death of the 35-year-old former NFL cornerback and said in a statement that "preliminary information suggests that this was not a criminal act."
The reactions of friends, coaches and followers have not been long in coming on social networks.
"We lost a great today!!!" said Chester Frazier, Davis' former varsity football coach. "RIP TO @vontaedavis man nothing but good memories of that guy at school!!," he added.
Davis had an excellent college career at Illinois before being selected in the first round of the 2009 draft by the Miami Dolphins.
In 2012 he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts where he enjoyed his best years in the NFL, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2015.
His final season came with the Buffalo Bills in 2018, where he drew attention when he announced his retirement at halftime of a game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Jim Irsay, the Colts' principal owner, paid tribute to Davis on Monday.
“I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Vontae Davis. A great guy, teammate, player. My prayers to the Vontae family,” Irsay wrote in X.
