The Cuban Ministry of Public Health reported this Monday that, of the 176 minors under 18 years of age with coronavirus in Cuba, 9 have been discharged after managing to overcome the disease.

Among the 176 confirmed cases, there are 10 children under 1 year old and 25 patients between 1 and 4 years old. In the 5 to 9 year old group there are 44 patients; from 10 to 14 years old add up to 48; and from 15 to 17 years old there are 49, according to the data offered by Dr. Francisco Durán García, national director of Epidemiology, during the usual press conference.

The highest numbers of confirmed pediatric cases are found in the provinces of Havana and Villa Clara, with 52 and 28, respectively, but at least one is registered in all the country's territories.

The ministry recognizes that it has even had foreign pediatric cases such as in Ciego de Ávila, where there were two of French nationality, and another in the province of Cienfuegos.

On previous occasions, Durán García has commented that no one is exempt from suffering from the disease, although it tends to have complications in people with a history of other conditions and in people over 65 years of age.

In mid-April, the MINSAP warned that, although it was not the most common, Children could also develop complications from being infected with the new coronavirus. “No age is immune to COVID-19,” the ministry said.

“Like adults, children are susceptible to the disease, although they generally do not develop the usual complications,” the organization said from its Facebook account.

Days before, a teacher and 29 children with their parents were isolated in the Villa Caoba aparthotel, in Caibarién, Villa Clara, for being contacts of a 7-year-old patient who was diagnosed positive for the coronavirus.

This Monday, a 5-year-old boy managed to overcome the coronavirus in the province of Sancti Spíritus, after testing negative in the latest tests carried out to check his state of health.

“Today is one of the most special days of our lives as pediatricians. Finally, the negative PCR result arrived for Yeris, our brave five-year-old warrior who defeated COVID-19. First child to fight the disease in Sancti Spiritus territory. Your pediatricians are proud of you,” said a doctor who attended the case.

On Sunday it was learned that two babies, one year old each, were among the new positive cases of coronavirus that were registered in Cuba until that day, while in the report of the last 24 hours no minor was identified.

The diagnosed babies are a girl residing in the Centro Habana municipality and a boy from Arroyo Naranjo. Both were in contact with other previously diagnosed cases.

“In general they present an evolution that goes without complications, there are no serious ones and it is the population group that has a more favorable evolution. But it is a risk group that can contract the disease and that we must protect much more,” explained Dr. Francisco Durán.

The Cuban government reported this Monday that 19 new positive cases of coronavirus were registered, which increased the total to 1,668 cases.

Currently, 2,543 patients are admitted and since the beginning of the health crisis, 69 people have lost their lives (two yesterday), two were evacuated and 876 have recovered, 49 in the last 24 hours. Another 6,188 people are monitored in their homes from Primary Health Care.

The 19 confirmed cases were Cuban. Of them, 13 (68.4%) were contacts of confirmed cases, in five the source of infection is not specified; while 10 were women and nine men. One of them had contact with a foreign traveler who was asymptomatic.

A total of 16 are residents of the province of Havana. Nine were detected in the Centro Habana municipality and one, respectively, in Habana del Este, Arroyo Naranjo, Cotorro, Plaza de la Revolución, 10 de Octubre, Habana Vieja and Cerro.
