The authorities of Mayarí reported that they will sacrifice the animals that remain on the streets due to the alleged outbreak of rabies that broke out in the city this month and that has causedthe death of two people.

The portalRadio Mayariechoed the news, reporting that street sanitation due to the rabies outbreak begins tomorrow, and that unclaimed animals will be sacrificed within 72 hours.

This news has caused a stir among activists throughout the island: "Unfortunately there is no protective movement in Mayarí, only 2 shelters have been identified and they have many animals. Therefore, there is no one to remove the dogs after 72 hours, especially because There is no transportation from Holguín to Mayarí to support," said the animal rights group.BAC Holguín.

According to what they said, several activists are trying to reconcile with the Municipal Directorate of Hygiene and Epidemiology of Mayarí that after 72 hours the animals are not sacrificed, but rather left under observation for 10 days.

"If after 10 days they do not show signs of rabies - this is what is established in the National Program against Rabies to decide whether or not there is a danger of contagion - they should be VACCINATED and WAIT for them to raise antibodies in the blood before RELEASING THEM" , they point out.

"That would be the right thing to do: the ethical and humane thing to do. In this way, the anti-rabies program is not violated, nor are animals without rabies sacrificed with strychnine," they add.

At the moment, animal activists are waiting for a response from the Mayari Municipal Directorate.

In mid-May the Provincial Health Directorate of Holguín reportedon an epidemiological event of suspected human rabies in a family in the municipality.

According to the information released, the episode occurred as a result of a stray cat that was brought to the house, began to get sick, and when trying to medicate it scratched a citizen and bit another. As a result of the incident, two people (brothers) died and a third was hospitalized with symptoms.

The deceased were identified as Eldris Sánchez Mustelier (Tata), fifty-three years old, and his brother, Fernando, who died on May 3 and 5, respectively, after being hospitalized since the end of April, according to a source told CiberCuba.

These days several researchers from the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine and specialists from the Ministry of Public Health came to the municipality to study the incident linked to animal rabies.

The authorities also announced that intensive vaccination of domestic animals in the city would begin this week.

"The collection of some dogs or cats will only be admitted through donation from their owners. The process of fighting rabies will have the population as the main protagonist," announced Radio Mayarí.

The news of the animal sanitation in Mayarí has sparked no little controversy among Cuban animal activists: "A call be made to the community to adopt or at least remove these animals from there...they can later be transferred to other places," he said. a Cuban

"Let's hope that the municipal Health Directorate makes the best decision, it is not correct to sacrifice those innocent animals without being sick, please give them a chance," commented another.

"Vaccinating is what they have to do. We cannot continue living in the wild," said another Facbeook user.
