World 2 Fly, Iberostar's new airline, hopes to fly to Cuba next year

The Mallorcan tour operator's new airline already has one plane contracted and is waiting to sign a second.

World 2 Fly, the new airline of the Mallorcan company Iberostar, plans to start flying next year and its first destinations will be Cuba, Cancún (Mexico), and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic).

This was revealed by Gabriel Subías, CEO of World2Meet (W2M), receptive and sofa bed of the Spanish hotel company, in an interview with Mallorca Diary.

Subías explained that they plan to have an operating license in February or March of next year and that they will fly starting in March or April, depending on how the market situation evolves.

“We would like to do the Caribbean: Dominican Republic, Mexico and Cuba,” said the director in charge of W2M since last January. The launch of World 2 Fly is going from strength to strength as they already have a contracted aircraft, a new A350, and are waiting to sign the second, said the executive.

Their plan is to create a large tour operator with its own airline, registered since September last year.

Despite the slowdown in tourism related to the recent coronavirus pandemic, the Spanish businessman hopes that his plans can be fulfilled by the summer of 2021, although he clarifies that “everything is subject to the global economic and pandemic situation.”

W2M currently has three brands: W2M DMC, independent receptive and a key partner for any operator in Spain, Portugal, Andorra, the United States and Cuba; W2M API, global provider of accommodation and destination services with an inventory of more than 500,000 resorts worldwide; and W2M Pro, a tour operator with more than 6,000 connected agencies in Spain, Portugal and Italy.

Iberostar Hotels and Resorts constitutes one of its main businesses, with a portfolio of more than 120 four and five star hotels in 19 countries and a team that exceeds 34 thousand employees. In Cuba, the conglomerate currently owns 17 hotels.

The Spanish chain announced at the beginning of August the opening of its facilities in the Varadero resort: the Iberostar Tainos (July 3) and Iberostar Bella Costa (July 10) hotels, under new security measures that include, according to a recent statement of the company, safe environment, hygiene standards, social space and innovative experience.

The Spanish company is also currently facing several lawsuits in United States courts for its activities in Cuba, although it has publicly announced that it will continue with its expansion plans on the island.

One of those lawsuits under Title III of the Helms-Burton Act It was made by a descendant of the owner of a building in Santiago de Cuba, confiscated in 1961 by the Cuban government, and where there is now a Spanish group hotel.
