Meliá speaks out on the accident at a Havana hotel that caused the death of a Cubana de Aviación employee

The company assures that at the time of the incident all the elevators had their operating license, renewed in January and valid for one year.

The Spanish hotel chain Meliá has issued an official statement regarding theaccident that occurred on September 12, when an elevator at the Meliá Habana fell and left a Cuban civil aeronautics worker injured.

In the note, posted on its Facebook profile, Meliá assures that "all the facility's elevators had their corresponding operating license, which had been renewed in January for a period of one year," while reporting that after After the accident, they decided to paralyze the facility's elevators to "carry out a new review by the certifying company to confirm their correct technical condition and allow them to resume operation."

"The required technical inspections were carried out periodically to guarantee its correct operation," the document states.official, where they claim to be collaborating with the Cuban authorities in the investigation of the causes of the event, and that once the process is completed they will inform them of the conclusions.

The tragic event occurred when one of the elevators at the Meliá Habana hotel detached from the fifth floor and fell. Inside was a crew member of the Cubana de Aviación airline, who was seriously injured and died days later.

“Meliá Hotels International and its workers are deeply sorry for what happened and we want to convey our most sincere condolences to his family and friends,” the statement concludes, stating that they were kept informed of the injured man's health.

Lima Mesa suffered two cardiac arrests, another friend of his, identified as Armando Toledo Valdés, explained on his Facebook account.
