The Cuban government registered 1,219 cases of coronavirus in the last week, a record number for the country since the health crisis due to the pandemic began last March, according to the Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda.
Portal Miranda detailed that, in those seven days, the numbers of imported cases were higher than those of native cases, and that the largest numbers were identified in Havana, Matanzas, Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Artemisa and Villa Clara, provinces where It accounts for 65.4% of the total number of those diagnosed in that period.
During the meeting of the temporary working group for the prevention and control of the new coronavirus carried out this Monday, it emerged that throughout December the country reported a total of 3,675 infections, the highest number for a month since the beginning of the epidemic.
The authorities insisted that the increase responds to the opening of borders and the arrival of international travelers. This situation favored the government to decide, as of January 10, demand the result of a negative PCR from those who arrive in the territory.
“It is very important that we overcome this situation,” stressed Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel. Likewise, in view of the epidemiological context, the temporary group approved the advancement or regression of several provinces and their municipalities to different phases of the COVID-19 recovery stage.
In that sense, it was decided to move the provinces of Pinar del Río, Matanzas and Villa Clara to Phase 3 of the recovery stage and keep Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba in that phase, while Artemisa and Mayabeque went to the Phase 1.
Likewise, an alert was issued for Las Tunas and Guantánamo due to the deterioration of their epidemiological situation. The rest of the territories continue in the new normal.
Díaz-Canel pointed out that there is a delay in the results of the tests for people entering the Island. “There are travelers who have arrived and left without knowing the results of the second PCR test,” he said. He also stated that the closure of the school year or other economic activities was not being contemplated.
Deputy Prime Minister Roberto Morales Ojeda assured that the events that occurred in recent days They are not associated with hotel facilities in tourist centers, since the increase in confirmed cases has been seen in the communities and is related, according to the official, to travelers going to their homes or those of their relatives.
Cuban authorities recognized on Monday a new record of daily coronavirus cases, by reporting 316 within 24 hours. This Tuesday, the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported 224 new infections, with which the cumulative total rose to 12,964 infected people since the start of the health crisis in March.
In December, the government was also promoting massive acts of repudiation against activists and opponents in several territories of the country, after the protests of the San Isidro Movement in Havana. However, the authorities have not mentioned whether or not these concentrations have influenced the increase in infections.
