Miami Beach authorities decideddo not extend the declaration of state of emergency or the curfew during the last weekend of summer vacation (spring break).
According to a press release from the Mayor's Office, "based on intelligence information, the city will not declare a state of emergency or curfew," measures that were imposed on March 23 due to riots in the area and two shootings that occurred. They left five injured.
However, Alina T. Hudak, administrator of Miami Beach, declared that traffic and evening parking restrictions will be maintained starting next Thursday, the date on which the last visitors of this vacation are expected to begin arriving.
The restrictions will be implemented with the aim of limiting vacationers' access to the residential neighborhoods of that city.
Residents in the South of Fifth neighborhood will only be able to access via Alton Road, Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue; while access to Flamingo Park will only be through Alton Road, details a report fromLas Americas Newspaper.
Likewise, starting March 31 at 6:00 p.m. and until Monday at 6:00 a.m. Parking restrictions will be in place along Collins Avenue between Fifth Street and Española Way, as well as the 100-200 blocks within this area.
Until next April 3, when thespring break, the Miami Beach police will maintain their presence in the areas with the highest concentration of people, to prevent a repeat of the riots of the first weeks of March and which forced them to request support from other police forces in Miami-Dade County.
Both the state of emergency and the curfew and the prohibition on selling alcohol from six in the afternoon, with the exception of bars and restaurants, reduced the altercations, especially on Ocean Drive, where shootings took place on the 20th and 21st of last March.
The hotel and commercial sector of Miami Beach expects the arrival of more visitors this weekend, something that could help businesses in the city that were affected by restrictive measures.
For the second consecutive year, Miami Beach authorities have been forced todecree a state of emergency and a curfew during the spring break, a vacation thatseem to be accompanied by violence, riots, fights and crowds.
