Cuban wrestling has just left the World Championships in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, without a medal.after none of its 12 representatives managed to climb to the podium of the event.
The last Antillean hopes were extinguished this Saturday, whenReineris Andreu and Alejandro Valdés were eliminated in the 57 and 65 kilogram divisions, respectively.
Of the entire island delegation,Andreu was the one who came closest to a medal by placing in fifth position. In the Saturday repechage, the Venezuelan started with a 10-0 victory over the Colombian Oscar Eduardo Tigreros, and then beat the Uzbek Gulomjon Abdullaev after overcoming a 0-3 loss and beating him by a minimal difference.
Unfortunately,Andreu later lost in the bronze medal dispute against Serbian Stevan Andria Micic (fifth in the 2019 world championship), who beat him 7-1.
As for Valdes, he had the advantage of the Chinese Shaohua Yuan and then decided 4-5 against the Indian Bajrang Bajrang, who could not “drag him” when he fell to the mat in his next exit.
In this way, Cuban wrestling went without medals in a global event for the first time since 2013, repeatingthe pathetic task of another relevant sport in the country, athletics, unable to win any prize at the World Cup event in Oregon.
In Belgrade, Cuba presented four Greco-Roman style gladiators (including the Olympic champion Luis Orta), three girls and five elements of the freestyle.
