Elena Hernandez, mother of the Cuban political prisoner Bárbaro de Céspedes Hernández, El Patriota de Camagüey, died on Tuesday after several days in very poor health.

Bárbaro himself, who is serving two years in prison for an alleged crime of attack, broke the news on his wall Facebook.

"Today my heart suffered a great wound, my mother passed away. May God caress her soul and welcome into his bosom that mambisa who gave life to the Patriot. EPD. Dear mother," he commented.

Last week El Patriota took advantage of the wall of Facebook from her daughter, Daymis de Céspedes Sánchez, to share a photo of her mother lying in a hospital bed, and asked her friends for a prayer chain for the elderly woman.

"She is going through her worst moments and only a miracle from God can save her. Today they allowed me to see her and it broke my heart to leave her in those conditions. I asked her to be strong and wait for me, that together we were going to see Cuba free, but With tears in her eyes she told me that she was no longer going to see that," she said.

Almost a year and a half ago, the opponent's mother gave an interview to the independent media Cuba Time, in which he pointed out that his son never liked communism.

"My son wants to free Cuba from communism, from hunger, from misery and need. That is what he shouts in the streets. He does not set bombs or set fire to a building. He wants the end of communism so that there is food and freedom "he stated then.

Hernández revealed that his son studied a degree in Mathematics and worked as a teacher, and stressed that at 57 years old he has never disrespected the police or anyone.

"My son is a person who respects God above all things," said the old woman, before emphasizing: "His feelings are noble and good, because we have instilled them that way."

Last April, Bárbaro de Céspedes Hernández was sentenced by the Municipal Court of Camagüey to two years of deprivation of liberty for the alleged crime of attack, a penalty less than the three years and eight months requested by the Prosecutor's Office for the charges of attack, disobedience and contempt.

The man known as El Patriota de Camagüey added this new sentence to another of one year and six months in prison, imposed in December last year by the same court, for his participation in the July 11 protests.
