Alejando Cuervo: The challenges behind Saúl in “The Children of Pandora”

“It is a completely different character from the ones I had played in my career. I had never played a homosexual character, a gay character. I have always played negative characters, some of them gallant,” Alejandro commented.

According to the actor, “it was difficult for people and perhaps it is difficult for them to see me in that type of characters, but the objective was to break with those schemes and of course not to pigeonhole myself as an actor. For me it was a great challenge because I have many gay friends and I defend the community one hundred percent.”

"From the beginning we worked without mannerisms and without any type of 'laziness' because that was one of the objectives of the scriptwriter, of the writer of the work, to defend homosexuality from the point of view of masculinity, where you don't have to be gay "Being effete is simply a sexual preference," said the actor.

Beyond the challenges that this character represented, Saúl left many lessons for Alejandro Cuervo: “Knowing how to play such a sensitive character, with such good feelings, such a good friend, such a good son, makes me as a person reaffirm those feelings that I believe.” I possess and accentuate them much more; having the possibility of interpreting the psychology of a character like this, with a sensitivity, even if it is not very physical, spiritual and sentimental.”

Inhis acting career, Alejandro does not have a specific role that he would like to play: “I think the richest thing about this career is the surprise that life brings you in terms of job proposals and characters. I don't think about a specific character, I like to be patient and wait for new challenges and new work proposals, who are interesting characters, with internal conflicts and always with a positive message for society and youth specifically."

For him, the most important thing is that his character has a lesson, “whether it is positive or negative, if it is negative about what cannot be done and if it is positive, that people take an example.”

There are many Cuban actors that he has had as references in his career, but there are some names that stand out on his list: "Fernando Hechavarría, that great Nacho Capitán that I enjoyed as a child and that later in my first telenovela 'The Hidden Face of the Luna' I had the opportunity to share a role with him; Luis Alberto García, Enrique Molina, there are many actors from our country that I admire and idolize and they are an example to follow in my career."

“The public has always played the leading role in my life, I work for the public, television really does not represent much economically, but I do it because I love it, because I love my audience, because I love that they love me and love me so much everything time, that for me is the greatest satisfaction,” he confessed.

In an interview with Alejandro Cuervo, we could not fail to be interested in his role as a father, since last October he and his wife Arletis RodríguezThey welcomed little Bastian.

“I am in the best moment of my life with the birth of my son a few months ago. “I am enjoying it to the fullest, enjoying this moment that I have been waiting for so long, that is my greatest blessing,” he acknowledges proudly and happily.

His responsibilities as a father will not keep him from his career, however: "Many people told me 'life is going to be different, life is going to change completely when you have a child,' but I prepared myself to be able to continue working, continue serving my audience, my career, my life as a nightclub worker, I record, I do television, I have many projects.”
