The body was found last Monday at mile 8 of State Highway 60, in Vero Beach, east of Indian River County, with the appearance of a homicide by stabbing. The identity of the body was confirmed hours later.

Indian River detectives found the body as part of an investigation by the Broward Sheriff's Office following the Coto's disappearance since the night of Saturday, January 21 near his wife's home in Tamarac.

Until now, the identity of the young man had remained undisclosed due to the ongoing investigation.

“She [Bownes] and her boyfriend fled the state immediately after committing the crime,” Rojas said.

Authorities found Coto's car, a beige 1998 Toyota Avalon, in North Miami Beach, and the van where the body was supposedly taken to Vero Beach for burial.

Coto, 28, had been officially married to Bownes, an African-American nurse, since 2020. However, he had filed for divorce and they had been separated since the middle of last year after it was revealed that she was unfaithful to him.

Heyoung man had gone to live with his mother, Anays Pérez since last July.

"He wanted to divorce her, but he was still in love with her," the sister said. "It tormented him and I think that because of the feelings that united him to her, he decided to go to her house."

The family began to suspect Bownes because he never called the house to ask about him after the police issued the missing notice for Coto on January 25.

Coto was born in Cuba and emigrated with his family when he was one year old. He was studying to be a surgical assistant and worked at the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood.

Coto's body has already been delivered to a funeral home and by family decision it will be cremated.
