The Cuban government announced this TuesdayNew measures to “facilitate the migratory flows of its citizens”, in the midst of a deep economic, political and social crisis, where tourism and remittances are gaining more and more importance for the maintenance of the regime.
Among the measures announced are the extension of thevalidity of the Cuban passport for 10 years, theelimination of extension requirement of this document and thedecrease in cost in consulates abroad.
Below we answer some questions that have arisen among readers ofCyberCuba following the announcement of the new provisions, based on the information made public by the general director of Consular Affairs and Cubans Resident Abroad (DACCRE),Ernesto Soberon.
1- What procedures must be done to obtain the new passport?
The procedures to obtain a new Cuban passportThey are maintained both within Cuba and abroad: Copy of the expired passport (for renewal), application printed on the model established for it, two passport-sized photographs, payment of the fee, present the previous passport, or the birth certificate, or the letter of acquisition of Cuban citizenship.
2- How long will it last?
If until now the Cuban passport expired every six years, with two intermediate extensions, with the new MINREX provision the validity will be extended.validity of the document from 6 to 10 years for citizens over 16 years of age, and 5 years for those under that age.
3- Does the new passport have to be extended every two years?
The Cuban regime eliminated the requirement to extend the passport every two years.Extensions will no longer be necessary.
4- How much will the Cuban passport cost abroad?
The cost of passports will decrease abroad:Those of legal age will have a tariff of 180 USD/Euros and those under 140 dollars or euros., regardless of the country in which they are requested.
The measure does not affect the cost of this document in European countries, where Cubans already pay around 180 euros to obtain a passport. However, it is a significant reduction for Cubans in the United States, who currently pay a $350 fee for their application.
5- Does the price of the passport change in Cuba?

6- What happens to Cubans who emigrated before 1971?
For Cubans who emigrated before 1971, the Cuban government now establishesthe obligation to enter national territory with a Cuban passport, "according to the new Constitution." Previously, people belonging to this group of emigrants could travel to Cuba with the passports of their adopted countries, requesting an HE-11 visa from the Cuban authorities.
7- What happens with the time allowed for the stay in Cuba of Cuban citizens and their foreign relatives?
The Cuban authorities decided "equate the length of stay in Cuba for Cubans residing abroad and their foreign relatives(spouses and children)". The measure would allow these Cubans to be with their foreign relatives in the country for 180 days.
8- When do the measures come into force?
The measures will come into forcenext July 1.
9- What happens to Cubans who have a valid passport for 6 years and are missing an extension?
The Cuban government explained that the passports valid for six years will not have modifications, but will coexist with the new passports with a 10-year validity that will begin to be issued on July 1. The general director of Consular Affairs and Cubans Resident Abroad (DACCRE), Ernesto Soberón, said when explainingprocess details that passports with six years of validity will be issued until June 30.
