Cubans no longer need a visa to travel to Iran, whose regime exempted 28 nations from that requirement in order to encourage tourism.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs Alireza Bikdeli confirmed in an interview with the official news agencyIRNA that citizens of 28 countries who want to travel as tourists do not need a visa since last February 4.
Also, thegovernment published that from that date holders of ordinary passports from 28 countries traveling to Iran "for tourist purposes will be exempt from the visa requirement."
"Under the new visa-free regime, visitors from designated countries will be allowed to enter Iran every six months (twice a year) andstay 15 days in each entry. The 15-day stay cannot be extended and visitors who wish to stay longer must apply for a visa," the official note underlines.
In an interview with the official news agencyIRNA, mentioned as beneficiaries of this measure Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tunisia, Tanzania, Mauritania, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Seychelles, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore,Cuba, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei,Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus and India.
Iran had already offered visa-free entry to nationals of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Oman, China, Armenia, Lebanon and Syria.
In December 2023 the Iranian Minister of Cultural Heritage, Crafts and Tourism,Ezzatollah Zarghami, had announced that the decision to unilaterally cancel visa requirements for visitors from certain countries was intended to encourage the tourism sector.
Until now, Cubans needed a visa in 2024 for 149 countries and had free access to only 28 destinations. With Iran's measurethe number of countries increases to 29 to which nationals of the island will be able to travel without a visa.
In the Latin American region, Cuba is only surpassed by Haiti in terms of countries withless powerful passport. Citizens of the neighboring Caribbean nation only have visa-free entry to 16 countries.
The regimes ofCuba and Iran have been allies for decades, and both are included in the list of Countries Sponsoring Terrorism prepared by the US State Department.
