The regimes of Cuba and China would be negotiating the construction of a joint facility for military training, which would facilitate the presence of troops from the Asian country in the Caribbean, just 100 miles from the United States.
The news is once again a revelation from the American newspaperWall Street Journal (WSJ), which this Tuesday added flammable material to its previous article on the alleged existence ofa Chinese spy center on the island.
American sources cited by this media indicated thatnegotiations for the new base would already be advanced.
If confirmed, this type of infrastructure would facilitate the presence of Chinese troops in Cuba permanently and the expansion of the supposed Intelligence activities, which Beijing and Havanathey insist on denying.
Following the revelation, this Tuesday the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry,Mao Ning, simply said that he was not aware of the issue.
"I am not aware of what is mentioned. We hope that the relevant parties dedicate your time and efforts to doing things that facilitate mutual trust and peace, stability and development in the region," Mao said at a press conference, describing the Cuban side as "irrelevant" in this matter.
In the midst of a climate of tensions between the United States and China, with the war in Ukraine in the background and mutual accusations of espionage, which include the shooting down of several hot air balloons over US airspace - which authorities attribute to Chinese espionage -, the secretary of State,Antony Blinken, concluded this Monday a symbolic visit to Beijing, carried out with the intention of smoothing out differences between the two powers.
Just one day after Secretary Blinken's visit concluded, new information emerges that fuels the misgivings raised by the United States authorities in relation to the Asian giant.
Blinken met with the main Chinese authorities, including the presidentXi Jinping, who appealed in said meeting to "mutual respect" as the axis of relations.
Neither Beijing nor Havana recognizes for now the rapprochement attributed to them from Washington. The Cuban Foreign Minister,Bruno Rodriguez Grill, and senior officials of his ministryhave expressed themselves emphatically against the information of theWSJ.
In its article this Tuesday, the media did not specify other details about this alleged Chinese military base in Cuba, whether its location, its mission or the number of troops it would house.
The terms of the alleged agreement signed between both communist regimes are also not known, although in the case of the previous information on the basis of espionage it was reported that the Havana regime would have collected a significant sum of money.
After somewhat confusing statements, finallyJoe Biden's administration confirmed the existence of a Chinese electronic espionage base in Cuba, but clarified that this is a problem of knowledge of the United States and said that the facility has been in operation since at least 2019.
Following the scandal unleashed by the revelations ofWSJ about agreements between China and the Cuban regime to carry out spying on United States communications, the agencyReuters He recalled that there was already knowledge and suspicion of these activities since 2018.
Reporters from the British agency traveled to Bejucal, near Havana, where they inquired with locals about themysterious enclave where it is rumored that a military base with antennas exists, some of which are visible, and which could be part of the infrastructure of a Chinese espionage center installed in Cuba.
