At least one dead and one missing in shipwreck off the coast of Artemisa

At leastone person died andanother is missing behind theshipwreck of a boat this Monday off the coast of the province of Artemisa.

The incident occurred inPlaya Majana during the night of July 24, and a survivor notified authorities on Tuesday afternoon, according to a report fromArtemis Diarycited by the page ofFacebook of the Municipal Assembly of Popular Power of that territory.

In the publication, the media explains that a 57-year-old man was rescued and after receiving first aid from health personnel from the aforementioned beach, he was transferred to the Ciro Redondo García General Teaching Hospital.

This is a 57-year-old patient who was received at 5:00 in the afternoon at the medical center in a state of moderate dehydration, the report states.

"Despite his condition, he was able to explain that he was on board a boat that sank around 10 pm on Monday, July 24, in the La Capitana area, on the south coast."

The patient told the director of the care center, Niurka Larrionda Valdés, that when the boat sank "they were swimming little by little" but that "one of their companions died almost in their arms and another was still missing."

The total number of people traveling on the boat or what its crew members did on it is not specified.

The man is being treated and according to the authorities ofSagebrush, they will update the case in the next few hours.

In November of last year, two Cubans also died in the shipwreck of a boat that was transporting twenty irregular migrants from the province of Artemisa to the United States, according to social networks.

"They tell me about a boat from the Rastro with more than 20 people who, according to what they informed me, all drowned. Someone please confirm this," alerted a user of the Facebook group 'Revolico Artemisa'.

However, several users commented on the publication, but unofficially confirmed the death of only at least two people.

"Unfortunately, it is true in life. There were two drowned people, El Peleco and El Tati. The latter was my cousin. Beautiful person, may God bless him. EPD," said the user identified as Lisbet Seba.

This event occurs a few days after the sinking of a boat with 23 migrants on board in the vicinity of Bahía Honda, which caused the death of seven people, including a two-year-old girl, after being hit by a border guard boat, according to testimonies from survivors and relatives of the victims.

The event occurred days before the visit to Havana of two high-ranking officials from Joe Biden's administration who traveled to discuss immigration issues with the Cuban authorities.
