Tragedy in Sancti Spíritus: Four people die in an accident, including two minors

The death of four people, including two minors, in a tragic accident in the town of Las Tosas this Wednesday shocked Sancti Spíritus.

The catastrophe broke out when A family traveling in a private truck tried to cross a swollen river on a bridge without railings, according to a statement from Ministerio del Interior (MININT), quoted by the newspaper Escambray.

There were 10 people traveling in the vehicle. During the crossing, the driver lost control of the truck, which left the road and was swept away by the waters, with all its occupants.

Two male children, aged four and 15, lost their lives in the accident, along with a 49-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman..

According to a source consulted by CyberCuba In Sancti Spíritus, the 15-year-old teenager drowned trying to rescue his girlfriend, who managed to save herself and is admitted to the Sancti Spíritus Pediatric Hospital. The girl, who is also a minor, is badly beaten but there is no danger to her life.

Two other minors - an eight-year-old boy and a nine-year-old girl - were taken to the Provincial Pediatric Hospital under medical observation, although they did not suffer injuries, according to the MININT.

The note does not specify the condition of the rest of the occupants of the accident truck.

Although the information does not indicate it, the accident occurred in an area popularly known as Las Tosas Nuevas, where the Yayabo hamlet is located, which crosses the river of the same name. The bridge without railings is located before reaching the town and it was there where the accident occurred, caused by a strong current.

Jaile Rabelo Orellana, mayor of the municipal government of Sancti Spíritus, informed Escambray that after the accident occurred, rescue efforts began, in which specialized forces from the MININT, residents of the area and local authorities participated.

The facts are under investigation, the note stated.

Traffic accidents have increased alarmingly this year in Cuba. At least 3,620 road incidents were recorded in the first five months, resulting in 290 deaths and 2,807 injuries. The Cuban authorities have not updated the accident data to date.
