Tampa police revealed a 911 phone call received shortly before Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo "Freddy" Ramirezattempted suicide outside the Marriott hotel.
In the audio, a hotel security employee can be heard alerting the authorities about the presence of an armed person in the place, he said. Telemundo 51.
The telephone exchange occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m., and the woman is heard describing the appearance of an armed man in the hotel's driveway, just as the sheriff's conference was taking place. Florida, which Ramírez had attended, along with his wife.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the officer arguing with a woman, while holding a gun in his hand. However, when officers arrived at the scene, the couple assured that there was no danger and left without being arrested.
Hours later, around 8:30 p.m., Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava revealed that she received a phone call from Ramirez while she was heading to Miami on I-75. In that conversation, Ramirez offered his resignation, citing having made mistakes and expressing his regret.
However, the situation took an unexpected turn when, around 10 p.m., Ramirez tried to take his own life by shooting himself in the head.
He was rushed to a hospital and underwent surgery which was successful, but left him seriously injured. Fortunately, it is reported that He is in stable condition and recovering positively.
Mayor Levine Cava, visibly affected by the news, highlighted the importance of mental health for police officers and recalled that anyone who is in crisis can call the number 988 to receive assistance.
In the midst of the situation, Assistant Principal Stephanie Daniels was appointed Interim Principal of the Miami-Dade Police Department, while JD Patterson was named interim chief of Public Safety for the county.
The incident is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to obtain more details and clarify what happened at the hotel.
Investigators are interviewing witnesses and seeking video evidence to reconstruct the events of the fateful Sunday.
