Three Cuban finalists in the jumping events of the recent World Athletics Championships in Budapest, including the tanned triple jumper Leyanis Pérez, will take part tomorrow in the Zurich Weltklasse Athletics Rally, the eleventh stop of the 2023 Diamond League.
Pérez, who will be accompanied again by her compatriot Liadagmis Povea,She will meet again in that Swiss city with the two adversaries who surpassed her in the fight for the world., the Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas and the Ukrainian Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk.
In Hungary, the young Cuban improved her fourth place finish in the 2022 World Cup by anchoringthird with a jump of 14.96 meters, and until the last round of jumping she was only being surpassed by the European, who had reached exactly 15 meters. However, the universal record holder Rojas showed her class to stretch to gold with 15.08.
The other contender from the Greater Antilles in the Diamond League matchday will be the high jumper Luis Enrique Zayas,fourth place in Budapest with a record of 2.33 meters that equaled his personal limit.
In Zurich,The Santiago native will once again meet face to face with the now global monarch Gianmarco Tamberi, from Italy, as well as with the Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim, who took the bronze from him in Budapest by having a second best jump.
The only element of the World Cup podium who will be absent this time will be the American JuVaughn Harrison, runner-up on Magyar soil.
The Diamond's next two stops will be in China (Xiamen, September 2) and Belgium (Brussels, September 8), to then settlethe decisive stops in Eugene, United States, on September 16 and 17.
