It was recently known thatmore than 22,000 new immigrant students will begin the school year in public schools of Miami-Dade County, in an increase in enrollment unprecedented in two decades.

As Superintendent José Dotres explained, schools that had been below capacity for years are now seeing their classrooms full.

Currently, the county has a shortage of teachers and although they have hired more than 600, they have about 300 vacancies due to the increase in enrollment.

The superintendent indicated that children who arrive with little English proficiency are being offered accelerated courses to learn the language faster.
