The official Twitter account of a battalion of Latinos of various nationalities fighting for Ukraine published a video of aalleged Cuban soldier captured in the war.
"Hey boy, what a great thing, gentleman! This is how they take the first Cuban captured in Ukraineprisoner of warnext to a Russian invading soldier. "His rights will be respected but it is worth asking: Why, how and why did he come from Cuba to Russia to invade a sovereign country?" wrote the Twitter profile of the Bolívar Battalion.
The “Bolívar Battalion”, which includes people from Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela and Bolivia, was founded and is composed mainly of Venezuelans, which is why the flag of this country often appears in its images and videos. They fight against Russia in the war that broke out at the beginning of 2022.
They often post individual photographs and videos of shootings on social media, with promises to “grant freedom from the tyranny of the Russian occupiers.”
The presence of Cuban mercenaries in Russia's war against Ukraine has been in the spotlight since the dissemination ofyoung people videos allegedly tricked into being taken to fight for the country presided over by Vladimir Putin.
The case has led Russian military and Ukrainian hackers to reveal details of the recruitment of not two, but hundreds of Cubans who are on the frontas part of international battalions fighting in the Ukrainian war.
After the first revelations that confirmed the presence of Cubans, the Havana regime claimed to have knowledge of a human trafficking network dedicated to transporting Cuban citizens to the conflict, and subsequently reported the arrest of almost one twenty peoplerelated to the recruitment of mercenaries.
However, in an unexpected turn of events, the government assured this Thursday thathas nothing against “legal participation” of its citizensin the war in Ukraine on the Russian side, but condemns "the illegal activities" of those detained for alleged human trafficking, because they "violated the law."
The statements were made by Julio Garmendía, Cuban ambassador in Moscow, to the Russian press.
