La Carreta restaurant wheel returns to its iconic place in Vedado

The emblematicwooden wheel, distinctive mark ofThe road, one of the most famous restaurants in Havana, has returned to its usual place.

This was announced this Thursday by the restaurant's management on its Facebook pages: “The iconic wheel of the wheel has been placed again.Restaurant La Carreta Cuba”, with a photo where the wheel is seen in the place it always occupied, lying at the foot of a tree, on one of the corners that form streets 21 and K, in Havana's Vedado.

Another wheel also appears in the photo, in one of K's flowerbeds, which was noted by a user who commented on the publication: "Now with two wheels, to roll better."

La Carreta reopened to the public on July 1st, under private management, after athorough reconstruction that brought life back to a ruined property, after being closed and abandoned to its fate by state authorities.

The new location, in the same place in the heart of Vedado where it has operated since its foundation, now has a façade that preserves the original structure, although the design is much more attractive.

The brick walls, its wooden and glass doors and windows, and the homogeneity with the urban environment where it is located, distinguish the establishment specializing in Cuban food.

Its menu shows typical dishes of the national cuisine such as habanera-style picadillo, ropavieja, fried cow, chilindrón de carnero and fried pork doughs, among other delicacies.

For years, La Carreta had joined the long list of businesses that the government, with its inefficient management, let fall into abandonment.

Although in 2018, during a tour of “luxury” restaurants in Havana, the secretariat of the National Union of Commerce, Gastronomy and Services Workers announced that La Carreta would be included in a process of recovery of famous gastronomic centers in the city. capital, that never happened.

InIn 2019, his dire physical condition was reported, with signs of danger of collapse. Then, it was said that it would be repaired by the capital's government, but it was forgotten like so many other places in the city.

In 2021Images of the interior of the restaurant were published. The building was left without windows, the floors were raised slab by slab, although the wood-veneered walls still remained.

In March 2022, the governmentHe blocked the walls and windows of the premises with blocks to prevent people from continuing to enter to take away fragments of wood from the walls, electrical outlets, tiles and other accessories.

At the beginning of November of last year, residents of the area reported thedisappearance of the wooden wheel that for decades was a symbol of the restaurant.

After several years closed, awaiting a repair that never came,the popular restaurant was demolished in November 2022, to the astonishment and indignation of Havana residents.

La Carreta was one of the classic corners of Havana's bohemia, particularly in the 60s and 70s of the last century, and a frequent place of visit for those who enjoyed tasting typical Cuban dishes, with excellent preparation.
