The Ministry of Public Health in Cuba (MINSAP) assesses how to allow theuse of medical supplies from abroad in the country's health centers.
"MINSAP is debating what mechanism to look for to be able to access these resources in a safe way. We hope that before the end of the year this can have a solution," said theDr. Marianela Zapata Romero, director of the Ernesto Guevara Hospital, to the official mediaTunera Vision.
The Cuban health system is deeply affected by the current economic crisis. There ismore than 250 missing medications. Added to the lack of surgical material and supplies of all kinds is the drastic decrease in medical personnel, which is pushing the situation to the point of collapse.
A patient must bring everything from the gloves to the suture thread to the consultation. The alternative that many Cubans have taken isbuy medical supplies in the informal market to be treated in health centers. However, the government does not allow the use of some materials in patient care.
"It is not a whim of MINSAP not to receive these resources, it is a matter of security. Everything we use in medicine goes through a control, by the different companies we have and people who are dedicated to these controls. Reallyit's a security issue"the doctor insisted.
She acknowledged that there is a wide supply of medical supplies outside the country, but the Cuban state spokesperson believes that some companies may not comply with all the health protocols required for the production of such delicate material.
"A suture that goes inside a cavity, with supplies that are manipulated in an eye, has to be controlled (...) because an accident can occur during the surgical procedure. It is the responsibility of the people who carry out the procedure. medical act, admitting a resource that we do not know where it comes from. Even if we see it very well wrapped, labeled, with pleasant colors, they may not be safe resources," Zapata explained.
The situation in thecuban hospitals is increasingly critical. Patients are worsening their quality of life at an accelerated pace due to not having access to simple procedures due to the lack of medical material of all kinds.
The discontent of the Cuban population is reflected every day on social networks. Several parents have been waiting for months for surgeries for their children with cancer and the response they receive is that"there are no doctors".
Contradictorily, the government assures that everything is fine, and maintains itsmedical missions abroad, and even adds more health professionals to these, despite the fact that the hospitals are on the verge of collapse.
