Inter Miami loses in Messi's Ballon d'Or celebration

Despite dominating possession, Inter Miami failed to avoid defeat against New York City FC by two goals to one.


On a night meant to pay tribute to the football iconLionel Messi for his historic eighth Ballon d'Or, theInter Miami met with defeat in a friendly against New York City FC, closing the year 2023 with a score of 1-2 at the DRV PNK stadium.

The "Golden Night" began with a dazzling ceremony in which the owner-managerJorge Mas, the co-ownerJosé Mas and the MLS commissioner,Don Garber, they paraded on a golden carpet.

Messi was presented as thewinner of eight Ballon d'Ors, followed by sincere thanks to the city of Miami: "You have shown me a lot of love and made me feel at home," said the Argentine, according to thewebsite of the club.

The Argentine star also shared his confidence in the future of Inter Miami: "I have no doubt, like at the beginning and much less now, that next year is going to be much better. However, the celebration culminated in a sporting confrontation where Inter Miami, despite dominating possession, failed to avoid defeat. New York took the lead just before and after halftime. Despite the local effort, Inter Miami's only goal came in the 81st minute, courtesy ofRobbie Robinson.

With this result, Inter Miami temporarily bids farewell to the competition, entering the offseason and looking ahead to 2024. This next year will offer the team its first test of continental competition in the Concacaf Champions Cup, a challenge that without doubt they will seek to overcome after a night of celebration and challenges at the DRV PNK.
