The Cuban trumpeterArturo Sandoval received the2023 Latin Grammy Award for Musical Excellence, in a ceremony held this Sunday at the Teatro de Capitanía, in Seville, Spain.
Sandoval received the recognition from the Spanish musicianLuis Cobos and the American composer and drummerHarvey Mason. During the event, his reaction was an emotional show of gratitude for the warm reception from friends and colleagues in music.
“It is a great honor (...) When your effort is recognized you always have to feel very proud of this because it is the sacrifice, the dedication,” he said minutes before the ceremony outside the Plaza de España in that Andalusian city. .
Along with the pianist, the Spanish singers were honoredCarmen Linares andAna Torroja, the MexicanManuel Mijares, the BrazilianSimone, and the Argentine rock bandSoda Stereo.
This Sunday's ceremony was one of the activities prior to the gala of the24th edition of the Latin Grammys on November 16, which for the first time takes place outside the United States.
HeMusical Excellence Award recognizes artists who have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic value to Latin music and the community during their careers. Other Cubans who have deserved it have been the pianistChucho Valdes in 2018 and the diva of the Buena Vista Social ClubOmara Portuondo in 2019.
In 2022, the trumpeter was among the nominees for the edition65th Grammy Awards, an award that he has obtained nine times throughout his outstanding career.
Sandoval celebrated his 74 years of life on November 6 playing for a charity event dedicated to medical research.
