Neighbors of the Lawton neighborhood, in the Havana municipality of Diez de Octubre, have decided to set fire to the garbage accumulated in a huge landfill on the corners of San Anastasio and Carmen streets.

“On the night of Friday, January 5, around 11:00 p.m., Lawton residents made the decision to set fire to the accumulated garbage in the 10 de Octubre municipality. "This was made known by a neighbor who prefers to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals," said the independent audiovisual producer Adrián Martínez Cádiz in a Facebook post.

“The lack of fuel on the island has exacerbated the landfill situation, affecting communities and leading to garbage reaching the center of the streets in many neighborhoods of the capital,” he said.

Martínez Cádiz considers that this incident reflects the “growing problem of waste accumulation in the city, driven by difficulties related to the supply of fuel.”

“In an attempt to address the overwhelming presence of garbage, some neighbors resorted to the drastic measure of setting fire to the waste at the aforementioned intersection in order to get rid of it,” he said.

Likewise, he believes that "the government's inability to manage basic issues is increasingly worrying Cubans who are affected by shortages of food, medicine, fuel, among others."

The problem of garbage accumulation in Havana It has been a constant in recent months.

Last November, for example, tons of garbage on the streets of Havana were waiting to be collected. due to lack of personnel and spare parts for the mobile fleet of communal services.

This was recognized by authorities in the capital in a report by Cuban Television, in which they admitted that "the deterioration of the equipment to collect garbage is the main Achilles heel of the companies."

More than 200 pieces of equipment were paralyzed in November for different reasons, including 63 collection trucks and 174 dumping trucks.
