The Cuban baseball playerEdilberto (Eddie) Oropesa starred in an emotional moment on Wednesday when leaving the field in the first game of the Dream Team of the Cuban Professional Baseball Federation (FEPCUBE).
Oropesa, 52 years old, had a brilliant performance on Wednesday, striking out two in a row against the first batters he faced in theexhibition game against Miami Dade College.
It was a triumph for the Matanzas pitcher who could not avoid tears, as he fulfilled in Miami his old dream of one day joining a first-class Cuban team.
"Oropesa escaped from the National Team in 1993 before debuting and this 2024 is when he made his dream of pitching for all of Cuba come true," FEPCUBE stressed on its networks.
Reporter Alfre Álvarez assured that there will not be a more beautiful moment in his career than this one in a baseball game, when he saw manager Brayan Peña arrive at the mound to ask Oropesa for the ball to keep as a souvenir.
"I was brought to tears," said the commentator on his Twitter account, who assured that "it was a magical night for all Cubans who love freedom and baseball."
The match ended with a victory for the FEPCUBE team by 3 to 2.
The left-handed Oropesa was born in 1971 in Central España, a community located in the municipality of Perico, Matanzas. He debuted in the National Series in 1988 and was a member of the Matanzas teams, until in 1993, when he traveled to New York to participate in the Buffalo University Games, he escaped from the delegation.
In the United States he debuted as a professional in 2001 in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Philadelphia Phillies.
He also played with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2002-2003) and the San Diego Padres (2004). He was the pitcher who inaugurated this team's new stadium on April 8, 2004, and won that first game at Petco Park against the San Francisco Giants.
