Medical students do not plan to practice in Cuba once they graduate

The number of young people abandoning university careers in the country is alarming.

Wanderlust visited a Higher Education center in Cuba, specifically dedicated to the training of health professionals.

The young people confessed that they are seeing very complex situations in their training stage, such as the case of having a duralgin vial and choosing among five patients which one to inject, because there are no medications for everyone.

"If I start selling churros on the corner of the hospital, I will earn more than the best qualified specialist," explained one of the future doctors.

"Do you plan to work once you finish your degree?" asked the YouTuber. The answer from two of his interviewees was clear: "No."

The young people explained that the problem is not only in how low thesalaries of health professionals in Cuba, but in theterrible working conditions that have.

Theshortcomings They are so extreme in the country that laboratory workers, doctors and nurses are continually exposed to the danger of contagion of diseases, for not having essential supplies for their safety, such as gloves.

There were other young people who said that they will exercise theMedicine career in Cuba, but they are concerned about how they will be able to face the challenge of saving lives in the country, in the current context.

In the summer of 2023, official data indicated that about800 thousand young Cubans are not linked neither to study nor to work.

Last week the Cuban government assured that it is implementing policies for the labor insertion of young people and so that they do not have todrop out of university studies.

The scarcity and increase in poverty pushes many students to leave their professional training to work and have their income help in the economy of their homes.
