Dismay over the death of a 23-year-old Cuban young man in an accident in Guatemala

The deceased young man lived in the Cotorro municipality, in Havana.


The Cuban guyAlejandro Sandin Hernandez, 23 years old, became the youngest of the confirmed victims of the tragic traffic accident that in the early hours of Saturday left 11 dead in Guatemala, nine of them Cubans, while they were traveling by road towards southern Mexico.

“Friends and family, we confirm the painful death of our Alejandro in a tragic accident. Thanks to everyone who wrote and kept up to date. "We are destroyed, may God receive it and cover it with his mantle."Yanelis Hernández wrote on Facebook.

"My friend. EPD, my life. What can I say if right now all of us who love you are devastated and even knowing it's true, I think it's a lie,” another friend wrote on social media.

“We realize that life is shit… and the best always leave. We will miss you, rest in peace. May God have you in the best place you deserve,” he added.

Another young man, also shocked by the tragedy, dedicated an emotional photographic montage to the Cuban migrant.

The last public post on Facebook by Alejandro Sandín Hernández is now especially moving.

“For a 2024 full of life”, the young Cuban published on December 25, 2023 on the aforementioned social network.

Alejandro Sandín Hernández did not appear in the initial list of six deceased released by the Guatemalan authoritieswhen reporting on the accident, which occurred at kilometer 133 of the Chicacao Suchitepéquez Pacific route, in an area particularly dangerous for road safety.

The victims whose names were initially revealed were Luis David Baños Lamadrid (25 years old); Josué Gesaias Melgar Martínez (28); Ihanosky López Pérez (45); Osmani Broche González (54) and Marleny Hernández Alfonso (54), and Luisa Reynosa Castillo (57, died in the hospital).

A Guatemalan, Ronald Valentín Chanchavac Pérez, 32, also died in the accident.

Bárbaro Alexander López is the only Cuban survivor of the accident.

Ause published by the Embassy of Cuba in the Republic of Guatemala said to bein communication with the competent authorities and "available to contact the families of the victims and provide consular assistance" to the Cubans involved in the unfortunate event.

The official note did not offer other details about what happened, nor did it identify by name the fatal victims of Cuban origin in the tragic accident.

In the last two years, unfortunately, there have been several reports oftraffic accidents involving migrants, including Cubans, while they advance by land towards the southern border of the United States.
