Hialeah fisherman to court for catching banned species of shark and small snapper in Florida Keys

AndHialeah man must appear in court in Marathon, Florida, forcatch a banned species of shark and a snapper smaller than the regulation size, the authorities reported this Sunday.

While patrolling the old Seven Mile Bridge parking lot at approximately 8:10 a.m., Florida Keys Sheriff's Office deputies detected thatYasmany Petisco Hernandez, 36, was actively fishing.

Officers searched the fisherman and found a dusky shark and a snapper in a cooler, Monroe County police said in a statement.statement.

The species found at Petisco is adusky sharkCarcharhinus plumbeus), protected at the federal level since 1999 and whose capture is prohibited in US federal waters, according to the official site of theFlorida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Since 2006,Florida added dusky sharks to the state's list of prohibited species, making it illegal to capture, possess, land, buy, sell or trade this species. Historically, this species was targeted commercially, primarily for its fins, meat, skin, and high-quality liver oil.

Populations of this species are considered vulnerable worldwide. Due to its size, it is a potentially dangerous species and has been associated with few non-fatal bites on humans.

While thespecies of snapper (mutton) Seized fish can be caught all year round, but no more than five specimens per angler and no smaller than 18 inches (45.72 cm).

AndHialeah man arrested in November after being caught spearing lobsters near the Card Sound Bridge, the Florida Keys Sheriff's Office reported.

Alejandro García Azcuy, 34, was charged with spearfishing in a prohibited area, lobster harvesting in a sanctuary, lobster spearing, failure to possess a lobster sizer, possession of grouper out of season, interference with a law enforcement officer and multiple navigation citations.
