The surprises of a tourist in a hotel in Varadero

“An all-inclusive with nothing to include”

Cuban hotels continue to be talked about among bloggers, tiktokers and travelers... but not very well, so to speak.

In recent days, the Ecuadorian Esteban Guevara - known on his networks as “Andariego” - recounted his failed experience in a hotel in Varadero, where he says he found “some surprises.” Of them the most disturbing was a poisoning that his partner caught after eating in one of the restaurants of the hotel facility.

Guevara said that after paying $20 for a collective taxi that took him from Havana to Varadero, he stumbled upon a facility that was “very old like most buildings in Cuba.”

Of his room, however, he said it was “fine,” “normal.” However,It was the scarcity of cocktails and the limited variety of food that shocked tourists the most.

“There was almost nothing, it was rum and Coca Cola or vodka with orange juice or beer, they didn't even have a blender,” he said.

There was no praise for the food either.

“The food wasn't that good, you know I don't complain much but the food wasn't good at all.”, he noted and immediately referred to his partner's mysterious intoxication.

To make matters worse, Esteban Guevara couldn't even enjoy the beach because there was a red flag due to bad weather.

"If you go to Varadero, choose the resort very carefully. I know that some are going to say that because it was 'cheap' that happened to me, but no, because we paid 120 dollars per night", he concluded.

Although the tourist did not directly refer to which hotel he was referring to, the images seem to correspond to the hotelWestern White Sands, a hotel facility that is not very well rated on the platformTripAdvisor.

Among the more than 1,700 comments on the video onTikTok You can find the opinions of other tourists who cited their own experience in hotels in the famous tourist hub

“Who in their right mind expected to see luxuries in Cuba?”; “An all-inclusive with nothing to include”; “Do not travel to Cuba”; “Everything included but there is nothing”; “Everything included, even intoxication”; “Not even if they give me the trip”; “I came back sick to my stomach,” were some opinions.

Several agreed that the Dominican Republic as a Caribbean destination has a much better quality-price ratio and others compared the deficient Cuban "stars" with those of hotels in the United States or Spain.

There was also no shortage of those who suggested staying in private homes - which are usually accompanied by a better experience - or those who recommended having a more compassionate view of the Cuban reality and starting to appreciate other things.

“Whoever travels to Cuba knows the situation of the country, I traveled and I loved it. I had an incredible sea, it was incredible to believe such beauty: the food, the room, the facilities took a backseat”, said one Internet user.

“I traveled to Cuba as a tourist. Regardless of the politics and economic situation, wonderful people live there, loving people,” said another woman.

Despite the Cuban government's marked efforts to turn tourism into its economic lifeline, neither the numbers of travelers visiting the island northe opinion of the majority of those who embark on the experience They seem to give wings to the regime's dream.

A few weeks ago aRussian tourist and blogger crudely recounted what her 16-day stay was like at the five-star hotel in Varadero, Iberostar Laguna Azul, an experience that he described as “difficult” and that was accompanied by a series of tips for those who are willing to face a similar adventure.

“Without a tip you are nothing,” was the first of a long list of recommendations that the author of the blog "Traveling with a Camera" gave to her readers, most of them Russians who have already lived the experience firsthand or are ready to do so. .
