Thewheat flour in Villa Clara is not enough to cover the demand for food products and the government made the decision to sell bread from the basic basket on alternate days to consumers.

The measure attempts to alleviate the shortage of raw materials that also affects other provinces in the country. The authorities assure that there was a modest increase this week in the supply of wheat flour but the account is still not enough to recover the production rate expected by the people.

Odel Dueñas, director of the Provincial Food Production Company, toldCMHW that all consumers will receive the product on alternate days.

"This Wednesday the distribution will begin in the Santa Clara warehouses, and on Thursday in the rest of the municipalities," he said. Villa Clara still does not have the necessary amount of raw materials to guarantee a daily distribution of bread.

The situation is not exclusive to the center of the island.Camagüey faces similar challenges, limiting the production of standardized bread to alternate days only in the provincial capital, due to the lack of wheat flour.

This shortage deeply affects the population, while it is observed with bewilderment that some private companies do have bread for sale.

This contrast highlights the inequality of access to basic products in Cuba, especially in times where even casabe, a traditional food substitute, is in short supply among the most disadvantaged sectors.

However, the regime gave a glimmer of hope to the people by announcing thearrival of a ship to Santiago de Cuba with 8,300 tons of wheat flour, a shipment that could stabilize bread production from Ciego de Ávila to Guantánamo, at least for a time.

Alberto López Díaz, new Minister of the Food Industry, assures that the flour received will avoid prolonged industrial processes and can be used in the short term.
