Cuba bought record numbers of food and agricultural products from the US in January

Last January, the United States exported agricultural and food products to Cuba for $45,168,873, an increase of 39.4% compared to the same period in 2023.

The Department of Agriculture detailed in itsreport corresponding to the first month of the year, the figure is large because chicken purchases exceeded previous sales volumes, with $33,012,358 dollars.

Cuba also purchased soybeans worth $2,853,680 dollars; $1,283,853 in pork; $608,106 in beef, and $302,612 in coffee.

Cuban economist Pedro Monreal stated that the tons of chicken meat exported by the US to Cuba registered in January 2024 the sixth highest monthly historical value since 2002.

Chicken meat is the main source of animal protein in Cuba, he recalled.

He adds that these exports reinforced the monthly rebound that began in November 2023.

"In January 2024, with approximately the same expenditure, 13.3% more tons were purchased than in December 2023 thanks to a price reduction," he explained.

It details that the figures from the US Department of Agriculture include all chicken meat exports to Cuba contracted by all types of final clients (state and MSMEs).

According to the Cuba-US Economic and Trade Council, in the first month of the year purchases of used vehicles in the US by people residing on the island also increased. The values totaled $3,071,000 dollars.

Last year United Statesfood exports to Cuba increased by 4.2 percent, with a total of $301,727,842 dollars.

That year also drew attention to the increase in coffee imports from the US, which reached the historic figure of 5.4 million dollars.

Humanitarian donations from the US to Cuba also rose to $36,563,551 in 2023; compared to $30,083,306.00 in 2022.
