Abandoned building collapses after heavy rains in Matanzas

Neighbors in the area had previously warned about the possibility of this building collapsing.

An abandoned building located in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, in the city of Matanzas, collapsed this Friday night, as a result of theintense rains that hit the west and part of the center of the country.

According to a report in the official newspaperGiron “The façade of an old foundry that had been disused for several years due to construction problems” on Calle San Juan de Dios, corner of San Diego in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, collapsed without leaving any people injured.

Images released by the media show the collapse of the structure, with large pieces of debris scattered on the ground and blocking the street.

The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. said local residents, who had previously warned about the danger that this building was in.

In the last 24 hours, the rainfall gauge network of the Meteorological Institute and the National Hydraulic Resources Institute reported accumulations exceeding 100 mm in 53 locations, of them 19 exceed 150 mm and 3 exceed 200 mm.

Precisely,This Friday the provinces of Havana and Artemisa in western Cuba were affected by a severe local storm which left shocking images of falling hailstones.

Reports on social networks show areas that appear to be completely white due to the accumulation of hail.

Some municipalities of Havana, mainly in Diez de Octubre, Cerro and San Miguel del Padrón, flooding has been reported due to the strong storm.
