The Torre de la Libertad de Miami, also known as Freedom Tower, is an impressive historic building in the heart of the City of Miami, witnessing the various stages of the Cuban-American community in the United States.

The building was completed in 1925, and the first point of interest lies in its design. It is inspired by La Giralda, the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede in the city of Sevilla, Andalusia.

The construction of the Torre de la Libertad in Miami took only a year. They used the "steel cage system" technique, which allowed them to create one of the tallest skyscrapers in the city at that time.

The second curiosity that you may not know about this iconic building is that it originally served as the headquarters of the newspaper The Miami News.

However, its role changed drastically in the 1960s. The Miami News vacated the building, which then became the processing center for over half a million Cuban refugees fleeing the communist regime in Cuba.

In 2012, a stainless steel sculpture was installed to honor the families of Cuban refugees who passed through the doors of the immigrant processing center between 1962 and 1974.

A third dazzling curiosity is that, during a restoration, it was discovered that a time capsule had been buried there. The box contained newspapers and other items from the time of the building's creation, revealing a surprising connection to the past.

The building also plays a crucial role in the arts and culture. It was the chosen venue to bid farewell to the legendary Celia Cruz in 2003, at an event that gathered more than 200,000 people in downtown Miami.

Freedom Tower currently houses the Museum of Art and Design and the Special Collections of Miami Dade College, strengthening its legacy as a sanctuary of historical and cultural memory.

The Freedom Tower stands not only as an architectural emblem of Miami but also as a beacon of hope for exiles and dreamers of a better future.
