The Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez showed its support for Mexico after the tensions between that nation and Ecuador, after Ecuadorian police officers broke into the Mexican Embassy in Quito with the aim of arresting former vice president Jorge Glas, who had been sheltering in place since December of the previous year.
In an extraordinary meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), convened by Honduras and held virtually, the Caribbean leader said: "Mexico can count on our firm support in the actions they undertake in the face of this unacceptable breach of International Law."
Díaz-Canel, who does not hide his sympathy with the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, described the event as “a hostile and unacceptable act, which deserves the most categorical rejection.”
“To accept or remain silent in the face of the unacceptable behavior of the government of Ecuador would set a very serious and dangerous precedent,” said the president.
The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, took advantage of the meeting to announce the closure of the Venezuelan Embassy and consulates in Ecuador in a gesture of solidarity with Mexico.
For his part, the Mexican president asked those attending the Summit to accompany the complaint that Mexico presented to the International Court of Justice against Ecuador.
Likewise, the president asked that Ecuador be expelled from the UN as long as they do not speak out for the non-repetition of this shameful event and violation of international law.
“The second thing that is also very important is that a procedure be defined based on this case so that if any State acts in the way that Ecuador did, the International Court of Justice presents to the General Assembly a resolution of definitive expulsion from the UN and that the members of the United Nations Security Council cannot exercise the now obsolete right of veto,” he indicated.
However, the meeting also highlighted the absence of some regional leaders, such as Uruguay, who abstain from participating due to perceived changes in the functioning of CELAC, partially dominated by leftist factions led by Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia itself. , Honduras, Brazil and Colombia.
Mexico and Ecuador broke diplomatic relations after the events that occurred on April 5. López Obrador instructed Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena to issue an official statement regarding the incident and declare the suspension of diplomatic relations with the Government of Ecuador.
