An elderly Cuban woman was able to make a purchase for the first time in aMSME of Havana thanks to the initiative of a youngyoutuber who provided him with a sufficient amount of money, in exchange for making the purchase in one minute.
The peculiar “challenge solidarity” was promoted by theyoutuber Stibito-Dominican of Cuba, a young man who shares his experiences as a Cuban who frequently travels to the Dominican Republic and who reflects with benevolencethe critical situation that exists on the Island.
At the same time that he “helped” the old woman with 3,000 pesos to make a purchase that herretiree checkbook does not allow him to do, the YouTuber advertised a MSME dedicated to the sale of imported foods located in La Güinera, the neighborhood where the young man resides.
Helped by another young man calledAhmed, youtuber Estibito-Dominico De Cuba said that both were the Cuban Mr. Bist (sic), a reference to the American youtuber and businessman James Stephen "Jimmy" Donaldson known asMrBeast on his social networks, in which he shares videos of people doing challenges in exchange for large sums of money.
Ahmed found an elderly woman and asked her if she had ever bought from the MSME, to which the woman answered no, because she had no money. The young man offered him 3,000 pesos to buy, in exchange for being able to make the purchase in one minute.
What did the old woman buy with that amount of money? Equivalent to about 11 dollars in theinformal currency market, the Cuban retiree was able to buy a one-kilo package of whole milk powder (2,000 CUP), three 250-gram packages of spaghetti (300 CUP each) and an apple (100 CUP).
Despite having been published on YouTube on April 14, the video appears to be from the end of the year (when the dollar was about 270 pesos), since Ahmed congratulates the old woman for"end of the year".
The purchase was made at the Mipyme 'Oreste's shop' in La Güinera, a humble neighborhood with a high density of population in a vulnerable situation.
Known for the massive demonstration that his neighbors staged duringthe historic 11J protests in Cuba, La Güinera is the neighborhood where the only protester of those days died (Diubis Laurencio Tejeda), shot dead by a police officer what wastried and acquitted by the regime.
Since then, the neighborhood has becomeplace of “pilgrimage” of Cuban leaders, from the rulerMiguel Diaz-Canel to the national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), the former spyGerard Hernandez Nordelo, all determined to show an image of closeness to the people and their “revolutionary fervor,” amplified by the propaganda machinery of the totalitarian regime.
The “initiative” of Estibito-Dominico De Cuba connects perfectly with the official effort to transmit an image of “normality” in La Güinera, a neighborhood where MSMEs and businesses “flourish.”influencers They preach by example the benefits of “charity”, that theological virtue to which the leadership of a “continuity” appeals that continues forward in its policy of “eliminate excessive subsidies and undue gratuities”, and extinguish the "supply book"and, by extension, to the Cubans who depend on it for food.
