Food stamp funds stolen from elderly Cuban woman in Miami

A Cuban old woman resident in Miami-Dade County has been Victim of having his entire food stamp card balance stolen, the food stamps that the United States government provides to immigrants after their arrival in the country, so that they can stock up on food.

In statements to Telemundo51, the woman identified as Daisy lamented: “Very sad, very sad because the resources I had were hacked, I lost them.”

She is one of the numerous victims whose food stamp funds have been stolen, in a series of scams that have been recorded in recent times in the county, due to which confirmation of an alert from the authorities to the community is expected or if an investigation into the cases has been initiated, according to a report from the television channel.

On March 20, the elderly woman made a purchase at a store in Miami with her credit card. food stamps, and a balance of $284.02 dollars was recorded on the receipt, however, when trying to use it two days later, the money had disappeared. “The empty card, with a penny”, she said sadly, while showing the receipt in front of the camera.

She immediately contacted the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, where she was informed that the card had been hacked and several purchases were made with it on March 22. All transactions were carried out in businesses in Philadelphia, according to the notes that the woman showed the reporter.

Officials at a Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) office in the West Dade area told Telemundo that in recent days an unusual number of people have made reports of scams food stamps, who have been given a claim form that they must send by email (EBTFraud@myflfamilies.com).

Daisy optimistically stated that she hopes that “the government, the authorities, will be able to find who is doing this.”

“I need my money back,” he said. “I'm an older person, I don't work, that's what I support myself with.”

According to the report, other counties in Florida also register a worrying increase in this type of robberies, for example, Osceola, in the center of the state.

Marcos López, sheriff of that county, warned about the sending of messages and emails requesting personal information, which compromises the security of citizens' data.

Another type of scam, he recalled Telemundo51, is the placement of devices in card reader machines, taking advantage of an oversight by business employees, in order to capture the information and PIN of the cards, to clone them.

At the end of March, local media reported the theft of food stamp funds from two Cuban women living in Miami who receive aid from the Federal Government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

In 2022 a man was accused of use coupons food stamps of a deceased woman in Miami-Dade.

Nearly 200 people were arrested in Florida in 2018 for fraud by individuals and companies to that program.
