“Cuba Day,” which was celebrated at the White House last Thursday, April 18, was attended by different political figures in the United States, artists, journalists and civil society, all with origins or ancestry on the Caribbean island.

Hosted by the White House Office of Public Engagement aims to recognize the contributions of Cuban Americans in the United States and “highlight the commitment of the current administration to Latino communities,” said a report fromMartí News.

Among the attendees, from the political field, stood out the current Secretary of Homeland Security,Alexander Mayorkas, Secretary of the Navy,Carlos del Toro, and the undersecretary of the Department of Labor,José Javier Rodríguez, all with origins in Cuba.

The latter commented on the commitment to contribute to the United States. "I am proud to have a high position in Joe Biden's administration as a Cuban-American from Miami and to be able to represent my community and recognize all the contributions we have made to this country," he told the press.

For his part, the outstanding musicianChucho Valdes, expressed that this was a dream come true. “As a child, when I studied my piano and things like that,” he dreamed of being there, and “here we are,” he assured the television network.Telemundo.

“We are here, in the White House, talking about policies to see how we can move people's thoughts,” said the businesswoman.Millie Herrera.

Chucho Valdés and his piano were in charge of closing the event, which was by invitation.

According toTelemundo This approach by the Joe Biden administration has special meaning due to the context, firstly for therecent immigration round that officials of both governments had, in which the regime “takes the opportunity to come and meet, to ask for everything they can, to see what comes out,” said the Republican congresswomanMaria Elvira Salazar.

The other point is the upcoming elections in the United States, where the Hispanic vote is important.

“Our people are so informed about what is happening not only in the United States, but outside the United States,” said the Republican congressman.Mario Díaz-Balart.
