New images show what happened after the attempted kidnapping of a Cuban child in Miami Beach

The video shows the child's father telling the police about the events. "He grabbed him by the neck, if I'm not behind he'll kill me, because he'll suffocate me in a second."


New images released by the Miami Beach Police show what happened minutes aftera man tried to kidnap a four-year-old Cuban boy when he was leaving a pharmacy with his parents.

The incident occurred in February when a man, identified asNicholas Sternaman, entered the CVS, grabbed the little boy by the neck and picked him up with the intention of taking him away. An action frustrated by the quick intervention of the boy's father, who lunged at him and grabbed him until he let go of his son.

Sternaman, 26, managed to leave the premises, but wasarrested by the Police because a pharmacy customer decided to chase him so that he would not escape.

The videos now released, taken by an officer's body camera, allow us to see Hassan Rodríguez, the minor's father, recounting what had happened.

"He grabbed him by the neck, if I'm not behind he'll kill me, because he'll suffocate me in a second," he explained, still nervous, in a video published byTelemundo 51.

At that time Sternaman had not been captured.

The images that have just come to light allow us to knowDevin Surajpal, a tourist from Tampa who was at the pharmacy and who helped authorities find the suspect.

"Everyone was looking around like, 'Bro, this guy is going to run away,' so I just chased him," he told police.

"I went outside and saw him, and I said, 'This guy can't escape.' So I immediately called the police and started running after him," he explained.

The four-year-old boy and his parents had arrived from Cuba on a humanitarian parole. less than a month ago.

Sternaman remains in jail without bail. He is charged with kidnapping, aggravated child abuse and assault.
