Five American politicians, four of them of Cuban origin, criticized President Joe Biden's recent decision to exclude Cuba from the list of countries that do not cooperate with terrorism.
Members of the US Congress Mario Díaz-Balart, María Elvira Salazar, and Carlos Giménez, along with senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, all Republicans from Florida, denounced the failure of the Biden administration to exclude the Cuban regime from the list, a decision made by the State Department this week.
Once again, the Biden administration has made a mistake in its foreign policy that undermines our national security interests. The weak explanation for refusing to designate the anti-American terrorist state of Cuba as a 'non-fully cooperative country' is as flawed as the rest of its approach to foreign policy," said Díaz-Balart in a statement.
Any semblance of legitimacy to Cuba's terrorist regime only strengthens it further, as well as our other enemies, putting the American people at risk," he added.
For María Elvira Salazar, the measure is undoubtedly a sign that the White House is paving the way to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
"How is it possible that a dictatorship that finances terrorism in Latin America, supports Hamas, and shelters international terrorists on its territory now 'cooperates' with the United States on counterterrorism?" questioned.
On the other hand, Carlos Giménez expressed that Biden's concession to the Castro regime is "pathetic," "unjustified," and "wrong."
Just last week, Raúl Castro's successor, Miguel Díaz-Canel, was in Moscow meeting with Putin and recruiting mercenaries to fight in the illegal and genocidal invasion of Ukraine," he recalled.
Senator Marco Rubio stated that President Biden has made it very clear that he wants to remove the Cuban dictatorship from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
"The criminal and illegitimate regime in Havana supports foreign terrorist organizations in Colombia and harbors ETA terrorists as well as fugitives wanted by courts in the U.S.," he emphasized.
Finally, Senator Rick Scott warned that it is a "sick irony" that Biden appeases the Castro regime in exchange for empty promises from the Mexican government controlled by cartels, to take strong measures against illegal immigration, as this will have the opposite effect.
"The same regimes that are fueling the massive invasion of our southern border that Biden has encouraged and allowed with his appeasement and failed open border policies will continue, allowing more terrorists, dangerous criminals, and deadly drugs to enter the United States, threaten our national security, and kill American citizens," he emphasized.
Last Wednesday, an official statement signed by the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, indicated that the conditions that previously placed Cuba in the category of countries that do not cooperate with terrorism have changed. The other four countries that continue in this category are: North Korea, Iran, Syria, and Venezuela.
The departure from Cuba could be interpreted as a first step by the Washington government to also remove the Caribbean country from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.
The State Department clarified that both lists are managed independently.
