Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban emigrants in a Catholic family, has had a prominent political career in the United States. He was born in Miami, Florida, and graduated from South Miami Senior High School in 1989. He continued his studies at the University of Florida and the University of Miami, earning his law degree in 1993.
He began his public life in 1998 as a member of the Commission of West Miami. Two years later, in January 2000, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives, where he served as the House Speaker from 2007 to 2009. In 2010, he reached the United States Senate, representing the state of Florida.
Rubio was part of Mitt Romney's presidential campaign in 2012 as a potential running mate. In 2015, he officially launched his presidential candidacy for the 2016 elections from the iconic Freedom Tower in Miami, becoming the first Cuban-American Republican contender.
Conservative in his social views, Rubio has been a strong advocate of the traditional family model and has opposed same-sex marriage and abortion. Furthermore, he has been critical of the Obama administration's policy toward Cuba, calling for stricter measures.
In 2025, Marco Rubio made history by becoming the 72nd Secretary of State of the United States under the Trump administration. He is the first Latino to hold this position, solidifying his status as one of the most influential Hispanic figures in American politics.
