A Chinese Dongfeng rental car and a Moskvitch collided this Wednesday between kilometers 80 and 88 on the National Highway (near the province of Artemisa), according to several photos shared by witnesses
The causes of the incident are unknown, as are any injuries, since those who reported it in the popular Facebook group Accidents Buses & Trucks claimed to have passed by the area apparently quite some time after the event.
One of them passed through the area around noon, and the scene resembled a deserted avenue where two broken-down cars stood in the middle of the street, silent protagonists of the story.
The strange scene of the two vehicles, the Asian one with damage to the front and the Russian one bearing a strong impact on the left side, has left dozens of internet users wondering what could have happened for both cars to collide on such a wide road.
"In that stretch, which is so nice and wide, they can only blame the Blockade," joked a user in the group.
Among the possible hypotheses are a blown tire that could have caused a loss of control of the vehicle, one of the two drivers having a momentary lapse in attention, or a poorly calculated turning maneuver.
"From what I see in the photo, the truck collided with the other one."; "I'm sure the one in the 'mosca' was about to make a U-turn... and the Dongfeng was coming in behind... and hit them hard."; "That Moskovitch was definitely dodging potholes, because that stretch is in really bad shape and the Dongfeng was going fast," were some of the comments.
"That section is dangerous; they paved the divider, and when there are potholes, some drivers end up on the divider, and before you know it, you're on the other road," said one user. "You have to drive it at night to see how there are hundreds of kilometers where you don't know which lane you're in. Not a single line marking," commented other internet users.
There were those who speculated that perhaps the accident occurred in the early hours of the morning and that the cars remained there as silent witnesses to a tragedy that took place in a context with additional aggravating factors, particularly the nighttime circumstances.
In the comments section of various posts about the incident, several internet users engaged in a debate about whether or not there are potholes on that stretch of the National Highway.
Another argued that not only during the night, but even on a very sunny day, accidents can occur, even on a wide avenue with few cars.
"Even the intense sun of these days can play tricks on you. Take the highway at that time, and it feels like you're in the Sahara Desert. The columns of steam rising distort the image in front of you. It's very exhausting to drive at that hour," he noted
“To crash, you just have to be on the road. All those who give their opinions while sitting in an office will never crash. Do you know how many things can happen that could lead to an accident? That’s why it’s called an accident. If instead of a highway they were on a train track, they definitely wouldn’t crash,” pointed out a user in the group, showing more compassion than many who criticized the drivers.
What happened? It’s not certain, but the Chinese and Russian cars remained there, in the middle of the street, serving as a reminder that accidents continue to be a daily issue in Cuba.
As of the closure of this report, there are no other confirmed details regarding the traffic incident.
Accidents of all kinds have shown no signs of slowing down on Cuban roads since the beginning of the year, continuing the same trend that marked 2023.
Last year, 729 people lost their lives in Cuba due to traffic accidents. Authorities recorded 8,556 traffic incidents that resulted in 5,938 injuries. Human error was responsible for 91% of these events, the authorities stated.
In one of the most recent incidents, a serious accident occurred on the night of May 20th on 5th Avenue in the Miramar neighborhood of Havana, in the Playa municipality. The accident left at least one person injured when a tourist vehicle collided with a BMW that had stopped several meters away from where the tourist vehicle came to rest.
