Woman stabbed in Santiago de Cuba by her ex-partner.

The woman was attacked in the presence of her son and her current partner.

A woman was stabbed shortly before 7 a.m. this Thursday in Santiago de Cuba allegedly by her ex-partner.

The man would have committed the assault in the middle of the street, in the presence of their son and also of the victim's current partner, as reported on social media by journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

The attempted femicide occurred while the woman was waiting for a bus from her workplace.

She, her son, and her current partner were waiting at "La Rotonda" on Carretera del Morro when suddenly her ex-partner appeared, who apparently was keeping watch in the vicinity of the place.

The victim - identified by the aforementioned communicator as Emilia Sabigne Borjas - is 38 years old and resides in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood.

According to witnesses, the man attempted to slit María Emilia's throat and managed to wound her, although the prompt intervention of other people prevented him from achieving his goal.

A video released by Yosmany Mayeta shows the seconds following the attempted femicide. In the footage -recorded from a distance- it is possible to see the woman on the ground and how she is assisted by several people.

A source close to the family revealed that this Monday María Emilia - who would be an employee of the Repair Company located on Mar Verde road - had already filed a complaint with the police, apparently due to previous threats she had received from her ex-partner.

The alleged aggressor, who has been identified as Yoel Menéndez Rivera, would be detained.

“I once again call on the authorities of Santiago de Cuba, Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, Secretary of the Communist Party; the new Governor Manuel Falcón Hernández, the Ministry of the Interior, and all its departments, since there was a complaint made previously, to seek justice and properly sanction these regrettable acts of violence,” said Mayeta.

María Emilia Sabigne is hospitalized in critical condition. She has suffered several cardiac and respiratory arrests and is undergoing surgery at the Joaquín Castillo Duany Military Hospital.

Until the closing of this report, there are no further details available regarding this regrettable attempted femicide.

At the moment, neither feminist platforms nor official press media have reported on what happened.

Until May 6th, the number of femicides verified by feminist platforms in Cuba so far in 2024 was 18 fatal victims, three attempted femicides, and five cases in need of access to police investigation.

In 2023, the highest number of femicides in a year was reported in Cuba - 89 in total - according to the underreporting of cases monitored since 2019 by the Gender Observatory High Tensions (OGAT) and the platform I Believe You in Cuba (YSTCC).

The Cuban regime does not include the figure of femicide in the current Penal Code, which was approved in May 2022.
